There is a pet store opening in the location between Lyco’s Nails and The Donut Palace in a week or two. They were going to open in Port A but got wiped out by the hurricane.

 

Michelle’s Salon was presented the Corpus Christi Small Business Excellence Award for the hair salon category. They award businesses that have achieved outstanding marketing success and enhance the positive image of small business through service to their customers and community. It is especially impressive that she did this while dealing directly with the Island sand storm. You go girl!

 

Ace Hardware was a busy place the Thursday before Hurricane Harvey hit. They did six times the business they would normally do on a weekday and are still not finished re-stocking. The even busier Ace Hardware in Port A was hit hard and are currently operating out of an 18 wheeler and mobile units.

 

Gratitude in Port A has re-opened and Sally invites everyone to come in and get out of the chaos. Hours are Tuesday – Saturday noon – 4.

Shells Pasta and Seafood in Port A at the corner of Avenue G and 11th Street has re-opened. Their hours are 5 – 9 pm and they are closed on Tuesdays.

 

Virginia’s on the Bay in Port A has opened. Hours are 11 am – 8 pm.

Pioneer RV Resort has re-opened and has spaces available.

 

The boat in Doc’s parking lot that was placed there nicely by the hurricane surge will be lifted by crane Friday at noon and placed back in the water. That might make for an interesting event to watch while having lunch. It was an unusual boat/hurricane event in that the owner actually saved money because he was able give the boat a bottom job  while it was dry docked.

 

CVS now has items for sale on weekends. I would like to think it was because of my column but more likely it is because it is after Labor Day and the end of the tourist season.

 

The Schlitterbahn Hotel rooms are full with evacuees with FEMA vouchers. The hotel has made an exception and has allowed dogs.

 

I just found out the Stripes on the corner of Hwy 361 and Park Road 22 did over $700,000 July 4th weekend. Yowza!

CVS in Port A should re-open in about two months.

 

The Fall Island Art & Farmers Market will be held at the Padre Balli Pavilion on Thursday, September 14th 4- 8 pm. They will also have a Kids Art Market for the first time for young artisans.

 

The Texas General Land Office is looking for volunteers for their Texas Adopt-A-Beach Cleanup. You can sign up at their website or show up at one of the 14 beach sites the morning of Saturday, September 23rd.

 

Doc’s Restaurant is now open daily with happy hour drink specials weekdays 3 – 7 pm. Enjoy $2 margaritas, well drinks and 16 oz Lone Star plus $4 for house wine. They are also serving $7 appetizers that include pulled pork sliders, fried flounder tacos, seared tuna and more. They have football drink specials during the games at both the restaurant and the Waterline bar below.

 

Animal Hospital at Padre Island welcomes master groomer Omar Rios to their team. He has been a groomer for 15 years and a groomer instructor for 9 years.

 

Snoopy’s Pier and Scoopy’s is now open daily Monday through Thursday 11 to 9 and Friday & Saturday 11 am until 10 p.m. and they accept charge cards.

 

Texas Country Night featuring Kevin Fowler, Zane Williams and Kyle Park will be at the Richard Borchard Regional Fairgrounds in Robstown on Saturday, September 16th 7 pm. Tickets are $25 and kids 13 and under are free. A portion of the ticket sales will go to Coastal Bend Disaster Recovery.

 

The Boathouse Bar & Grill upstairs bar has re-opened. Their kitchen did not suffer damage and is serving the bar upstairs and at the patio.

 

Dr. Dorrell at the Medical Center will continue to see patients until the end of September. Everything is business as usual at the center during construction until then.

 

Sonic’s Carhop Classic features a cheeseburger with onion rings currently at a $2.99 price.

 

Comedian Chris Tucker will be at Selena Auditorium Friday, September 15th, 8 pm. Tickets start at $60.

Omni Hotels are dog friendly but they need to be 25 pounds or less and there is a non-refundable $50 fee. I learned this while spending my evacuation at one in Fort Worth.

 

The Barrel will have half price menu appetizers for Thursday Night Football. Their $12 burger/fries basket, shrimp/fries basket and fish tacos were quite popular as their Monday Night special. They are closed on Sundays only.

To evacuate I managed to get on a Thursday night flight to Fort Worth. I was unable to get a flight back to Corpus so I flew to San Antonio. I tried to get an Uber back to the Island and surprisingly it took just 4 minutes for a driver to arrive. The cost was $186 and the drive went by fast chatting with the driver and being online.

 

Personal Observation – Nothing is on sale at CVS Friday – Sunday. Hmmm, wonder if this holds true for the ones in town.

Island in the Son United Methodist Church on Hwy 361  has been virtually destroyed. It will take some time before it is functional.

 

Snoopy’s Pier owner Ernie Buttler reported “We have a lot of work to do but hope to open in three weeks on the low side and six weeks on the high. But we will open come hell or high water!” They still have no power.

 

El Constante Condominiums on the seawall now has one and two bedroom, 2 1/2 bath units available and some are pet friendly. Padre Escapes is handling the rentals and their number is 361-949-0430. As of this writing they still had about 30 units available.

 

The Boathouse Bar & Grill is currently not open for business due to repairs and cleanup.

 

Paddle 4 Parkinson’s event has been cancelled.

 

Port Royal Resort fared well structurally but it will take some time  to re-open.

A Mano at the Tower Center on Hwy 361 suffered severe damage.

 

The Statesboro Revue Band will be live at the Veranda patio at Schlitterbahn Saturday, September 2nd 8 - 11:30 pm. Proceeds from the concert will be going toward a local relief fund for the residents of Port Aransas. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door or online. “Shine On Texas” t-shirts will be available for purchase at the show or online with 100% of the proceeds donated to Hurricane Harvey Relief Efforts.

 

The Seashore Schools suffered minor water damage and school will begin Tuesday, September 5th.

 

Clem’s Marina is mostly demolished with the entire back of the store and all the docks gone.

 

Holiday Inn on Windward Dr. has suffered a lot of damage and is closed. There did not appear to be any damage to the restaurant.

 

Island Italian Restaurant suffered a complete loss. This is so sad. An Island landmark gone.

 

Bob Hall Pier and Mikel May’s Beachside Grill made it through, amazingly! As of this writing they are waiting to get power.

 

Snoopy Paul’s boathouse was completed destroyed so he will remain in Iowa with his family. He will be dearly missed by his many friends who felt like he was family.

 

Kody’s, Giggity’s and Shorty’s sustained damage but not enough to keep them from getting back to business.

 

Doc’s Seafood & Steaks owner Fred Soward “All is good, lost some docks and decking. Restaurant looks good, working hard to clean up and reopen asap.”

 

The Beach House in Port A posted they had minimal damage according to one of our readers.

 

The Island House on the seawall sustained minimal damage and will start renting units for Friday if power returns by then.

 

Island Joe’s Coffee has set up their Joe on the Go trailer in the parking lot since they still have no power as of Tuesday afternoon.

The event benefits Friends of the ARK which supports animal rehabilitation. The cost is $20 for kids under 12, $50 for the 5k event and $55 for the 10k event.

I keep getting asked about the grocery store but I have no answers. I tried calling and texting the developer but have not gotten a response. I can only guess no grocery store has committed but that is pure conjecture.

 

The Sunset Sounds Free concert in Port A featuring Aloha Dave and the Tourists is set for Friday, July 14, 7-9pm. Friday. Buffalo Wings Company will be opening soon next to Subway at the HEB plaza in the Bluff. They were founded in Torrean, Mexico in 2015 and this will be their second location. They offer 15 types of wings including lemon pepper, BBQ bourbon and mango habanero.

The Aquarius Park has a portion of it adopted by an Islander . An application to the Parks and Recreation Adopt-A-Park program was approved  and there are others who have submitted applications.  So far plans are for a community garden plot and new playground equipment.

 

There are currently 241 condo/townhomes for sale on the Island. The first two weeks of June there were eight purchased.

 

The CC RTA  has added a bus route shuttle that takes the ferry with a priority lane with no waiting. There is no Aransas Pass bus so on that side you need to get to the ferry launch.  In Port A they will oblige for anywhere you would like it to stop.

The 4th of July Island Blast Fireworks Show will be on the 4th of July. Seriously, we get asked that a lot. There will be port-a-potties at the end of Whitecap near the yacht club.

Cough, cough and yes I am still coughing eleven days after spending two hours outdoors during our 40 mph sandstorm day. I have not had a cold or flu in decades and do not have allergies so I kept thinking I would get over it. I finally went to the doctor today where I was diagnosed with bronchial irritation caused by things like “dust.” Here’s hoping the steroid, steroid inhaler and cough med kicks in.

 

Cough, cough, pardon cough, cough my cough, cough. Last Saturday the Island sandstorm was especially bad and I made the mistake of spending a couple of hours outdoors with friends that day. Well, ok it was at the Pelican outdoor bar. Finally on day 4 I feel some slight relief. So far they have received only seven complaints. More complaints = more action.
